The attraction of, say, Grant Morrison writing a Superman story is essentially how far a writer can take the possibilities implicit in limitless power.

Green Lantern's green ring works the same way - anything the wearer can think - and together with the other DC kings, the heroes tilt at gods. They are gods, more or less. Flag-waving, crime-fighting immortals.

In "Justice League - The Animated Series," Green Lantern mostly imagines breatheable bubbles and concave shields. He's also short-tempered. At least it's fun.
